Homemade Greek Yogurt Everything Bagels
Who doesn’t love a good bagel? I know I sure do. Not only are they delicious but they are a very convenient breakfast option, too.
Did you know that one single large bagel typically ranges from 300-400 calories and 60-70 grams of carb? Keep in mind that those numbers reflect a PLAIN bagel with NOTHING added to it.
I typically opt to buy either smaller bagels or bagel thins when I am at the grocery store… why? Because I (as well as a lot of other people out there) typically like to load my bagel up with lots of goods— cream cheese, scrambled eggs, breakfast meat, avocado, etc. AND calories tend to add up fast.
OR… I sometimes opt to make homemade bagels myself, with non-fat greek yogurt and self-rising flour making up the base of the dough. I’ll be honest— I am not perfect and don’t make this recipe very often (because buying them premade at the store is SO much easier)— but when I do make these they sure are a treat!!! The best part? They are a much healthier alternative to the processed ones that can be bought in stores. They are nutrient-dense, yummy, and SUPER easy to make! See below for the recipe.
Homemade Modified-Everything Bagels
Yield: 4 bagels
Total Prep Time: 30 minutes (5 minutes of prep and 25 minutes to bake)
Bagel Ingredients:
2 cups of self-rising flour
1 cup + 2 tbsp plain non-fat greek yogurt
1 tsp salt
2 eggs, whisked
Modified-Everything Seasoning:
2 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp flax seeds
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
pinch of salt
*** I want to add that I use chia/flax solely because I have them readily available in my house… feel free to make a traditional everything seasoning with poppy/sesame seeds if you desire!!!***
Directions:
Heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
Line oven tray with baking paper.
Add self-rising flour, non-fat greek yogurt, and salt to a large bowl.
Start off by mixing with a wooden spoon or spatula until crumbly. Then, put hands in bowl and mix… begin kneading with hands until a ball of dough is formed. Note— dough should not be sticky— if it appears to be sticky then add a little more flour (until no longer sticky).
Place ball of dough onto lightly-floured flat surface.
Divide the dough into 4 equally-sized pieces.
To form bagel shape, roll out each piece of dough into ropes (by using your hands). The goal should be to make each “rope” approximately 6” long. Once this length is reached then join the ends together to form a circular bagel shape. Press the ends of the dough together to seal.
Place the bagels onto the prepared baking sheet.
Brush the tops of the bagels with the whisked egg.
Make the modified-everything seasoning topping by mixing all seeds/powders/salt in a small bowl.
Top the bagels with modified-everything seasoning.
Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until golden brown in appearance.
Remove from the oven, allow to cool for ~20 minutes, and enjoy!!!
Yes, buying pre-made bagels at the store is easier and more convenient than making your own homemade bagels… trust me, I get that. BUT if you happen to have some free time on your hands and like experimenting in the kitchen I highly encourage you give this bagel recipe a shot! I personally love the taste of them… and like them even more given that they are homemade. & besides, don’t our bodies deserve us investing more time into ourselves? More specifically, our health?
& that is all for now my friends… until next time!
